Editing with Collaborators

Once you begin editing a transcription a pencil appears in the header bar, meaning you have now checked out the file for editing. You can check the file back in to allow others to edit automatically or manually. To check-in manually, click the pencil icon in the header. Otherwise, the file will automatically check itself back in when you leave the page, or after 30 mins of no edit activity.

If you are not the owner of a file, you will see an avatar of the owner in the header menu. When a file is currently being locked by another user, the editing will be displayed with a lock icon.

To summarize:

  • The first person to start editing a document automatically checks it out. It becomes read-only for anyone else that opens it.
  • After the file goes undisturbed for 30 mins it auto-checks itself back in.
  • If you want to force a check-in outside that window, you can press that button to "release" it.
  • If you are not sharing the collection with anyone, then it has no effect.
